Haunt pencils by RyanOttley Haunt pencils by RyanOttley
Thought I'd show a couple pages to HAUNT. It's the new book I am working on (I'm still doing Invincible too!) with Robert Kirkman writing, Greg Capullo layouts, me pencils, and Todd McFarlane inks, coming out in OCTOBER.
I put Greg's layouts in between the two pages of my pencils so you can compare them all. He does some nice tight layouts, really helps me speed things along, that way I can do my best to handle two books at a time. Basically I print out his layouts, tape an 11x17 bristol to it and then lightbox it all. I go straight to finished pencils most of the time. It's a lot of fun working over Greg's lines, I'm in awe of that guys skill. I talk more in depth about everything HAUNT in an interview that will be up next week on CBR, I'll be sure and post a journal about it.

Ryan

Holy shit! I just picked up the first issue of Haunt last week, and the rest of the Comic Book Club shares my feelings of "HOLY CRAP THIS COMIC IS AWESOME." All of you are doing an amazing job, keep it up! I can't wait for the next issue. It's an honor to have found you on dA and be able to tell you how much I love your pencil work. <3 /fangasm

a very interesting process. as a fan of yours, and also an avid Spawn reader in the old times, I see that the finished piece is very Ottley, but with a strong Capullo feel in the page composition, character posing and maybe anatomy as well.
hope you post more samples, I am curious to see where all this leads. I usually hate when one artist is hired to do just layouts and the other finishes, cuz even if it speeds up the process the result is often cheap. Good to see this is not the case!!

I am so excited for this book to start hitting shelves! I've never picked up any comic based on the team working on it before, but you guys are all favorites of mine, and I just can't see Haunt being anything less than spectacular.

Ryan, I was really stoked to see this and wanted to challenge myself to grow. Here is a link of a version I posted today. I used water color pencils, brush pens and sigh, :( a permanent marker!!! but I thought it turned out pretty good for only taking a few hours. Anyways, your the best and I just wanted to let you know I gave your guys all the layout and pencil credit on the pic.

THANKS for the growth experience!!!

Greg is a master in composing pages to tell the story... The sequence of events moves at a rapid pace but you can still get the details of what's going on. You can tell a great sequence layout when words aren't at all necessary.
And of course your pencils are awesome as usual. And what can we say about Todd... he's a legend, so you're like the Tree Tenors of comicdom... or can I call you the "tree Caballeros"?

Impressive that you can have that amounty of quality, doing two books at the same time!
Your prelims are neat and the composition of your pages very dynamic!!
Hats off, Mr Ottley! :o

Man, I'm getting so excited for this book! I just bought the Spider-Man:Torment HC, and it's got me all nostalgic for the days of McFarlane again!

Ryan, your pencils look awesome, man! I have no cluehow you keep everything looking so kinetic, but you do it in stride!

Can't wait until this book gets here!

Seen these already, but Nice Stuff!

Have you tried printing the layouts in non-repro blue (20-40% cyan) directly onto the bristol? Might save ya a decent amount of time per page -- considering you're doing two books, every bit might help.

Really looking forward to getting this series.

Talking to friends and acquaintances who've already got one, it looks like the 11x17" Brother all-in-one is all anyone would need to set this up. Of course, I did it the harder and less space saving and less economical way with an old 11x17 Mustek and a newer 13x19 Epson 1400.

We're calling it digital inks. ;) But yeah, you got the gist. He adds quite a bit of his signature McLines though. I'm fine with how it looks. I'll always prefer traditional but this aint bad.

That's too bad. Hopefully it's a better merge than his "inks" over Portacio. I felt it didn't do either of them justice.

But damn your pencils look tight on this anyways!

Being a fan of yours and Kirkmans,I will pick up the first issue without a doubt, but I am not a huge Mcfarlane fan anymore... he's been out of the game a little to long, so I will have to wait and see..
Greg Capullo is a great talent as well, one we just don't see that much of anymore, and that's a shame.
Your work on the pages is great and here's hoping for a killer book from the four of you!
Just make sure Invincible keeps rocking!!

Sweet! Not enough of that stuff in comics, I say. Also, it seems like a suitable replacement gimmick for "Symbiote." ;)

I'm digging the frantic energy in those swirls, 2-3rd panels in the second page. Looks not-quite-solid, not-quite-liquid, and fast as all get out.

First page is really cluttered, and the fact that all the lines are the same thickness is kind of a bummer. Your invincible stuff is great but I'm just not feeling this.
