INV88 page 11 pencil to ink process by RyanOttley INV88 page 11 pencil to ink process by RyanOttley
INVINCIBLE 88 came out this week! Here's a process page, I inked my own pencils for this issue. So here's what my pencils look like before I throw inks on top. I ink with a Kuretake and/or Pentel brush pen. And some Staedtler pens, only sizes I use are 005, .01, and .03.
Background stars are added in Photoshop, no I didn't stipple out all those stars! That'd be a huge pain and just not help my monthly deadlines!
Ryan

how do you do the stars? seems like it would take forever just using the pen.

Just something we digitally place in the background using Photoshop.

Great work Dude. I really like the Kuretake and Pentel brush pens. I just got some Winsor Newton series 7 brushes ( a 0 and 3) I am learning to love them. :)

Thanks for the process post! Didn't realize 0.03 is the highest you'll go on your pen sizes!

I just dont need higher when I'm using a brush to do anything thicker.

I really like how loose your pencils are. It really shows how absolutely comfortable you are inking, that you can take pencils that loose and refine them in the inking process.

Did you lay this page out on the Cintiq first, or straight to the pencils here?

Cintiq layout for the whole issue.

So, the question is, then, did you create that star pattern or is it one you found, or how exactly did that go? I'm having a bitch of a time trying to find star patterns that don't look like they came off a photograph. I really like the graphic quality of your stars and am curious how you do it.

It's something EJ Su made for Tech Jacket, Robert just made the stars more dense to be used for Invincible.

I was totally gonna ask if you did those stars by hand!

Anyway, I also wondered how you decide what number of panels to put to a page and how you want to lay them out. Seems like the planning alone would take a very long time. Or does Robert just give you very precise scripts with non-dialogue panel descriptions and stuff?

He does say panels, and includes dialogue. That way I match faces with dialogue to get the feeling across.

nice work ryan as usual

do you think you would ever use your cintiq to "digitally" ink your work , or is that something you wouldn t be interested in

Your pencils lose something when they're inked. I love your pencils.

I couldn't disagree more. While his pencils are always excellent his inking technique is great. His line work is just amazing to me. Just my opinion though. :D

And that's why comic artists stay alive longer these days, because of digital quick tricks.
