Walking dead 50 cover by RyanOttley Walking dead 50 cover by RyanOttley
Pencils-Erik Larsen

Inks- ME

So Robert Kirkman called me up one day and asked if I wanted to do a crazy variant cover for the Walking dead issue 50 that shows all the Walking dead characters as super-heroes. Ya know because tons of Marvel books were doing variant zombie covers for super-heroes for no reason, so Robert thought he'd do a variant super-hero cover for his zombie book. I liked the idea but I told him no, it's just too much work for a jokey type cover and I just don't have the time to design characters and do a gatefold cover. So he then asked me if I'd ink it if he got Erik Larsen to draw it. I said HELL YES! He calls up Erik Larsen and asks him, Erik says it's just too much work for a jokey type of cover. heh. So Robert offered to design the characters and do a layout. And we went to work on it. I was pretty exited about all this. I love Larsen's layout's and energetic big fisted action. I geeked out on this big time and had a lot of fun inking it. Hope ya like.

It's weird to see them as superheros, but it's still pretty neat. ...Is that a lightsaber that Michonne is using as her weapon?

The Walking Dead is by far my favourite comic book ever since I got introduced to it by a friend of mine who also loves the zombie genre however, The Walking Dead quality really surpasses all George A. Romero's Dead movies. When I read it, I never quite felt reading a zombie comic but probably, the most human comic where it seems truer people with truer feelings and emotions actually live and they are more common than the realities of northern societies even though they both share one common thing: the need for survival however, what makes Rick and the survivors different than any Wallstreet businessman is that they have no masks! In a world gone mad, everyone got to discover what they were from inside from a lawyer who found the bravery to mutitale her boyfriend and his friend corpses in order to turn them into zombie repels to an ordinary woman who found a true hotshot living on her.
And then we are graced with that picture that shocked me for the fact it is an ultimate attempt at avoiding the total destruction of his very own innocence and now I discover one of the minds behind it: my lucky day.
Walking Dead has the quality of J.J Abram's Lost tv show and all the fun of Romero's movies... how can anyone not like that?
If you, would like to know, you just got another D.A fan and just make sure mr. Kirkman NEVER stops writing Walking Dead that skilful and that in a world where american comics got industrial, he managed to keep that traditional devotion of desperatly waiting for a comic issue to be released alive X)

You guys should have made this into a comic. In fact, a crossover with Marvel Zombies.

You realize that now people are going to be clamoring for this, right? Not the cover but the actual version of Walking Dead where they're superheroes instead. Oh, yes, there will be fan-fiction.

This is a great cover. What I like most about this cover is the energy between both artist and you can really see what an inker brings to the pencils especially an inker that can pencil-- that makes all the difference in the world. Thanks for sharing.

HA! Well it was a little intimidating at first but I tried to make myself believe that they were my own pencils so I just went ahead and got started, treated his pencils the same way I treat my own.

Very helpful advice. I feel myself getting too excited when I ink my own work and I think that level of timidness might help pull back the reigns as it were. Congrats on living up such opportunities, man!

Oh my, I was going to flame Kirkman here, but fortunately I've read your comments here.
I'm only as far as vol. 3, I'm not sure if later volumes are even available here.

Ha ha, never thought they'd do such an awesome variant cover (I'm way behind on my Walking Dead reading).
Thanks for posting both the rough pencils and the inks- it's just great to study all the work and polishes that went into it. Solid work, beautiful inks.

This is such an insanely cool cover. They could seriously use some superpowers in that series.
Amazing inking job! You really brought the page into epic and impressive life (and undeath). That zombie head flying into the foreground is great!
What did you use to ink this? Also, is the above image the final pencilling as you got it?

Yes, that is the full pencils I received. I ink with a Staedtler brush pen and regular pens.

He really let you run free with it.
I remember you mentioned the brush pen to me once when I asked you some time ago. It's a good pen, but I never liked the quality of the black, though it works great on dry brushing.
At a convention a while back, Eric Talbot gave me a really nice disposable brush pen that I haven't been able to find more of. It's just got some Japanese writing on it so I don't even know what company it's from.
Anyhow, enough rambling. Once again, great job on the inking!
